Social isolation among senior citizens is prevalent in many different communities today. It is important to make sure that our loved ones are being well taken care of no matter where they are and where they have chosen to live.
Senior citizens that have chosen to remain living in their homes may actually see an increased risk of social isolation when compared to those senior citizens that have instead chosen to live in a retirement community or other senior communities.
Isolation not only affects a person’s mental health, but it also poses significant risks to their physical and emotional health and well-being as well. It is important that we find ways to ensure that our loved ones are connecting with others and are taking care of their social health.
One of the biggest ways we can help combat senior citizen isolation is by making sure there is adequate transportation available. Many seniors no longer drive, which makes it harder for them to get to point B from point A. Special transportation and even public transportation can make a big difference in the lives of a senior citizen and will provide them with the freedom they need and deserve to remain socially active.
Finding a hobby and joining a group of like-minded individuals is also a great way to help combat isolation. It promotes the opportunity to socialize with others that share the same interests and encourages senior citizens to remain active and social within their communities.
Technology is another way in which a senior citizen can stay connected to friends and family. Adaptive technology includes assistive and rehabilitative devices for people such as walkers and hearing aids. These devices help with social interactions and make it possible for senior citizens to continue to lead active and healthy lifestyles.
Social isolation is usually first noticed by family members, and they will be able to see the difference it plays in a person’s life. In order to help a socially isolated person, you must first recognize what is going on, so the proper steps can be taken to help them and continue to oversee their health and happiness while encouraging them to participate in a more active and social lifestyle.
Socially active seniors lead happier and healthier lives which means their overall well-being will be much higher and their chances of depression can be much lower.
