March 23 2018

Bridging the Generation Gap withCyber SeniorsThe world has become very digital, and many things are now accomplished online. This is why it is so important to make sure that you carry knowledge of the internet and social media. Seniors that take the time to familiarize themselves with this digital world also find that they can improve their social lives by being able to communicate with more people and can even help keep them connected and in touch with their family.
More and more younger people are growing up using the internet and social media and other technological advances in their daily lives. So, why not harness this technology and take the time to teach seniors so that they can better combat cases of social isolation and bridge the generation gap to improve their overall health and wel lbeing.

What is Social Isolation?

Many factors can contribute to social isolation for a senior. However, it is key toremember that loneliness and social isolation are two different things and should be treated as such.Social isolation means that there is no contact between the senior and society. Loneliness, on the other hand, is more of a temporary setback and is a shortterm separation from contact with others.
Social isolation in seniors can cause a person’s selfworth and selfesteem to suffer as well as can promote negative feelings of loneliness and depression which can then cause other adverse health problems.

Emotional Isolation

Emotional isolation is another state of isolation but is when a person already has a social network that they participate in, however, they are still feeling emotionally separated from the people they surround themselves with. They may find that it is difficult to relate to others. Social and emotional isolation affect approximately onethird of the senior population, so it is important to find ways to help eliminate this problem and improve upon their health and happiness.

Cyber Seniors

The internet is one way they can utilize to connect with others like themselves, reach out to friends and family that may be too far to visit, and can promote a healthy social life while bridging the generation gap and learning new ways to connect with others.
Cyber Seniors is a group that mentors seniors and teaches them how to use the internet and other technology. They help them develop this knowledge so that they can soon benefit from the advantages of being able to connect to morepeople quickly and easily while also being given the chance to find different online social groups to interact with and engage in on a more regular basis to help fight any instances of social or emotional isolation they may be feeling.
