For some, seeing a doctor can be an anxiety-inducing activity that causes stress levels to rise as you worry about the thought of unwelcome news. However, there are things you can do to help relax you and get you into a more positive mindset prior to the appointment so they can turn into something you look forward to, rather than dread.
Strength in Numbers
Preparation is the key to taking full advantage of your next doctor visit and walking into the exam room with a positive attitude. If you feel that you will find more strength in numbers, then it is perfectly acceptable for you to bring along a family member or a trusted friend if that will help ease your mind and comfort you.
It may also be beneficial to have a second set of eyes and ears to help you remember any critical information or even bring up something you may have forgotten about yourself. It will help ensure that the appointment goes smoothly, and you don’t miss any vital and helpful information.
Before your appointment, be sure to make a list of all your current medications including both prescriptions, herbal supplements, and over the counter drugs, you may be taking. Also, make sure all your medical records are accessible in case the doctor needs to go over anything.
If you have questions, it is always a good idea to write them out ahead of time so that nothing is forgotten by the time your appointment rolls around. Having a pen and notepad with you is also a clever way to keep track of any notes or other valuable information the doctor may give you at the appointment.
Preventive Screenings and Services
Finally, prior to leaving the office, make sure to get any information you may need or may find useful regarding any preventive screenings or services that may need to be done. If you are given this information ahead of time, you will be able to research these options and become knowledgeable and better prepared to discuss any and all treatments or tests with your doctor at your next appointment.
No matter what the appointment is for- it is always good to be prepared and ready to take full advantage of the appointment and the one on one time you have with your doctor. Also, if you are currently living in a senior housing facility, you may also have access to transportation to and from your appointments as a resident service that is included.
